Then the app is free. All of it, forever.
Every core feature works with the AI switched off: the weekly reflection, all eight wellbeing categories, aspirations, goals, habits, barriers, the insights, and the behavioural science tools, which are forms you fill in rather than conversations you have. Turn AI off in Settings and nothing is taken away and nothing is locked.
The AI is an extra layer of support, not the product. It reads your week back to you and talks you through a check-in when you want that. Plenty of people will not, and the app was built so that is a normal way to use it rather than a degraded one.
Technology is the knack of so arranging the world that we do not have to experience it.
Which is the whole reason this app is shaped the way it is. If you want out from under your smart devices, the part worth keeping is the ritual: ten quiet minutes a week, looking at how it actually went. That is free here and always will be.
And once you have the hang of it, you will not need us for it. A notebook does the same job. We would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

Bring your own AI
$0.99 per month
Plug in your own OpenRouter key and run the AI on your own account. Every model in the catalogue unlocks, for chat and analysis.
AI is billed at cost, directly by your provider. We add no markup. Your key is encrypted server-side and never returns to a device.
This one is not pay-what-you-can, because it grants no credits. There is no usage cost for a Supporter price to subsidise.
What a credit is
AI work costs credits. How many depends on which model you pointed your companion at, because a fast, cheap model and a flagship model cost very different amounts to run. The app shows you the cost next to every model before you choose it.

Topping up
If you run out before your month resets, credit packs are available at one price for everyone. Purchased credits never expire, and your monthly allowance is spent first.
Why it is priced like this
The goal is a wellbeing app that stays alive, not one that maximises revenue.
There are real costs behind the app: the database, hosting, cloud functions, the AI itself, and the time to keep it maintained. Paid plans cover those. That is the whole ambition.
That is also why the AI is billed the way it is. Bring your own key and you pay your provider directly, at their rate, and we make nothing on it. An app that wanted to squeeze you would not offer that.
Pricing FAQ
Do I need a paid plan to use RetroPals?
No. The reflection loop, goals, habits and insights are all free, and the free plan includes a monthly AI allowance.
Can I use the app with no AI at all?
Yes. Switch AI features off in Settings and everything else keeps working.
What happens if I cancel?
You keep any credits you already had, you drop back to the Free plan's monthly allowance, and your data stays exactly where it is. Nothing is deleted and nothing is locked behind a paywall retroactively.
Do I have to prove I need the Access price?
No. You choose it, and that is the end of it.
Which currency am I charged in?
Your own. Prices here are US dollars, and the app displays the real price from your app store in your local currency before you buy anything.
Will I be shown a purchase sheet before I know the price?
No. Every purchase is confirmed inside the app first, naming the item, the price and the terms, before any store flow starts.
